LEADING FROM
THE MIDDLE

Leading from the Middle is a National College three-term professional development programme for small teams of middle leaders in primary, secondary and special schools. The programme offers a blended learning experience by including a range of face-to-face sessions, online activities and a school-based leadership activity, to deliver its aims.

So that middle leaders can contribute fully to raising standards in school, the five aims of the LftM programme are to:

The school will gain:

  • a highly competent leadership team at middle management level equipped to deliver effective school improvement programmes;
  • a development programme for leaders that meets national performance management and Continuous Professional Development (CPD) requirements; and
  • a coherent leadership programme for middle managers that complements other National College programmes
QUALITY ASSURANCE

LftM programme facilitators are drawn from the most experienced facilitators
working with Carnegie Leaders in Learning. Facilitators are experienced trainers and all have backgrounds of
headship, active consultancy or senior management in an LA.
They have been trained specifically for this programme
and are highly regarded. There is an ongoing evaluation of the programme including participant evaluation and nationally moderated quality assurance reviews.
TARGET AUDIENCE

LftM is designed to be undertaken by between two and four middle leaders in a
school, supported by a leadership coach, usually a member of the leadership team. For the middle leader participants, there are three full days of regional face-to-face training during term time plus two twilight sessions.
Leadership coaches are provided with one day's training plus one twilight session. Participants also gain exclusive access to an extensive set of innovative online resources.
